¿Qué es la osteoporosis?

La osteoporosis, es la disminución de la cantidad de masa ósea, lo que hace que los huesos sean menos resistentes y más frágiles.

Esto provoca un riesgo aumentado de sufrir fracturas ante traumatismos mínimos.

Inicialmente no presenta síntomas, aunque puede tener como consecuencias la pérdida de talla, deformación de columna y es la causa de fracturas, más común entre mujeres mayores de 50 años.

Factores de riesgo:   

* Envejecimiento
* Menopausia
* Menopausia temprana (antes de los 45 años)
* Fracturas previas
* Antecedentes familiares de osteoporosis
* Delgadez
* Vida sedentaria
* Dieta pobre en calcio y vitamina D
* Tabaquismo, consumo de alcohol y café
* Enfermedades de la tiroides y paratiroides
* Diabetes insulino-dependiente
* Artritis reumatoidea
* Transtornos de la conducta alimentaria
* Malabsorción intestinal
* Tratamientos con corticoides

¿Cómo se puede prevenir?

- Eligiendo una dieta rica en calcio.
- Realizando actividad física.
- Exponiéndose moderadamente al sol.

¿Qué es una densitometría?

Es un estudio que mide con exactitud, la densidad mineral de los huesos en diferentes regiones.
Es un método no invasivo, indoloro y seguro. Es usualmente, la mejor forma de detectar la osteoporosis.

Hola Carmen, lamentamos que te hayan diagnosticado osteoporosis, pero como seguramente el médico te ha dicho es relativamente común. De lo que nos cuentas se puede ver que tomas los recaudos necesarios para cuidarte. Felicitaciones!
